Your Veil is a Battleground

"With a focus on young women, Your Veil is a Battleground looks at the lives of Iranian youth.

Inspired by Barbara Kruger's famous "Your body is a battleground," Kiana's project examines the word 'veil' not only as the literal meaning of a covering, the hijab, but how it also represents the curtain that separates the public and private lives of Iranians.

On a daily basis, risks are taken to push back on the harsh and suffocating realities the government has enforced. By following these women, Your Veil is a Battleground shows this push pack in real and quiet ways by focusing on the fashion, the colour, the personality and determination of this generation. This project captures the crossing of 'red lines' both behind the closed doors and on the streets of Tehran.

While the Iranian government‐owned media remains filtered and restricted, most western media has turned their attention toward questions about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, directing public opinion to support enforced sanctions on Iran. It is rare indeed to see or hear about the everyday lives of young Iranians.  My hope is that this project will open up a window into the lives of ordinary people, away from any chaos or politic."
